Resurrecting the Shakespeare Hut

Shakespeare Hut logo edit 5Digital Drama are honoured to be partnering the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Mustard Club in presenting ‘Resurrecting the Shakespeare Hut’ – an installation and dramatic reconstruction in the summer of 2016 to co-inside with Shakespeare 400 and the First World War Centenary.

Resurrecting the Shakespeare Hut commemorates the 100th anniversary of the opening of the YMCA Shakespeare Hut on the grounds of the current London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. As part of the YMCA’s many huts built for the rest and recreation of serving forces during the First World War, Shakespeare Hut was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the playwright’s death, with a particular remit to bring Shakespeare to the troops. The project will collect, record and present the heritage of this forgotten building as well as gathering local family stories of the First World War to preserve and share them with the wider community.

Global Feast

Global-Feast-Final-Flier-aDigital Drama are delighted to have been commissioned for a second year by Global Arts Kingston to produce their programme for the Kinston Connections festival.

Global Feast is an oral history project which focuses on bringing to life the heritage of Kingston’s Tamil, Chinese, Korean, Gujarati, Punjabi and Afro-Caribbean communities through food. It will explore recipes, dishes and feasts brought to Kingston by members of these communities and their relatives and ancestors as they made Kingston their home and brought the flavours, tastes and smells of their homeland with them. It will provide opportunities for cultures from different communities to compare how recipes were handed down to them and explore the regional and family variations in their meals and feasts or celebrations. The theme of food will provide a focal point for the exploration of a much wider heritage around cultural identity.

Global Feast will be part of Kingston Connections, 21-29 June 2014 at The Rose Theatre and will also be featured on the Global Arts Kingston website.

Global Feast is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Awards for All

Unearthing Family Treasures from the First World War

Memorabilia posterCall to Action!

Help the Rose Theatre unearth Kingston’s treasures from the First World War

Do you have family memorabilia to share from the First World War? The Rose Theatre are looking to borrow treasures, photographs and documents for a major exhibition to mark this important centenary.

We are interested in life on the home front as well as on the battle field and are keen to represent all the communities of Kingston.

Images, artefacts and recorded memories will conjure up Kingston during the First World War in this interactive audio trail at the Rose Theatre in September 2014.

Writings and diaries from local Nobel playwright and campaigner John Galsworthy will be supported with voices and memories of the community; from the home front and battlefield. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and created by Digital Drama, this major exhibition will evoke the sounds and sacrifice of a generation steeped in war.
