Digital Drama are running the commissioning for FilmMerton – an exciting mix of short film, augmented and virtual reality happening in the London Borough of Merton in 2019 and 2020.

FilmMerton Short Film Commissions

CALLING ALL FILMMAKERS…. CAPTURE MERTON LIFE ON FILM

FilmMerton are launching 4 short film commissions to be delivered as part of this Cultural Impact Award winning project from the Mayor of London, aiming to build audiences for film across the London Borough of Merton.

We’re looking for ideas for short films that reflect the vibrancy, passions and diversity of people living in Merton. The 4 short film commissions include 2 for established filmmakers and 2 for young filmmakers (aged between 18-25). Each successful applicant will produce a short film celebrating an aspect of life in the London Borough of Merton.

Details of commissions:

2 x Established Filmmakers: £7,000 each to make a short film (duration up to 10 minutes)

Applicants will need to demonstrate the following:

  • strong idea for a short film that celebrates an aspect of life in Merton
  • evidence of a passion for film and links to previous short films made
  • how they will involve members of the community in their film, in front of or behind the camera
  • commit to taking part in industry training day workshop as part of FilmMerton
  • ideas for further fundraising an additional £3,000 per short film budget (either cash or in kind contributions)

2 x Young Merton Filmmakers (aged 18-25): £500 each plus up to 5 sessions of mentoring to make a short film (duration up to 5 minutes)

Applicants will need to demonstrate the following:

  • strong idea for a short film that celebrates an aspect of life in Merton
  • a passion for making short films
  • evidence of being aged 18-25 at the point of submitting application
  • evidence of residency in the Borough of Merton at the point of submitting application

The 2 Young Merton Filmmakers and 8 runners up will also be given the opportunity to attend the BFI Future Film Festival in February 2019.

Key dates:

Submissions open: 19th November 2018

Closing date for applications: 6th January 2019

Shortlisted filmmaker interviews: Week of 21st January 2019 

Commissions announced: February 2019

Films completed by: 21st September 2019

Premiere of films at Mitcham Reality Festival: March 2020

  1. The commission is delivered as part of FilmMerton
  2. The “applicant” is the named person making the application.  However, there is no limit to the amount of people who can be involved in making each film
  3. For the Established Filmmaker commissions, applicants must be resident or studying in the United Kingdom
  4. For Young Merton Filmmaker commissions, applicants must be aged 18-25 and living in the Borough of Merton on date of application
  5. The fee will be payable in three stages:

Established Filmmakers:

FIRST £3,000 (week of 25th February 2019) on approval of production plan

SECOND £3,000 after progress meeting (week of 17th June 2019)  

FINAL £1,000 on receipt of final edited film (week of 23rd September 2019)

Young Filmmakers (18-25):

FIRST £250 (week of 25th February 2019) on approval of production plan

SECOND £200 after progress meeting (week of 17th June 2019)  

FINAL £50 on receipt of final edited film (week of 23rd September 2019)

  1. No additional expenses will be paid for by FilmMerton
  2. The selection panel will comprise representatives from film industry and Merton Cultural Advisory Group
  3. Closing date for applications is 6th January 2019
  4. Films must be produced between March and September 2019
  5. Copyright (IP) of films will be held jointly with the filmmaker and FilmMerton
  6. Each film must include an end card (supplied by FilmMerton) displaying FilmMerton and funder/sponsor logos
  7. Established Filmmakers must commit to obtaining their own public liability insurance up to £1,000,000 and ensure that all equipment is adequately insured by the start of the project. Young Filmmakers will be assisted by FilmMerton with insurance requirements
  8. In submitting a film all filmmakers must declare that all music copyright is agreed and paid for
  9. All filmmakers must obtain signed release forms from all contributors and share these with FilmMerton
  10. FilmMerton reserves the right to make changes to these terms and conditions if necessary
  11. On selection successful applicants will be required to sign a letter of agreement containing full details of commitment and delivery of materials before the advance payment of the commission fee is paid.
  12. Commissioned Young Merton Filmmakers will be offered a maximum of 5 mentoring sessions with an industry expert
  13. 8 shortlisted Young Filmmakers will be offered a place on the BFI Future Film Festival on 21-24 February 2019

What will we look for in an Established Filmmaker application?

Essential:

  • Is it an engaging idea for a film which celebrates local people and/or communities or is an artistic response to life in Merton?
  • What is the applicant’s previous experience and do they have examples of quality work?
  • Has the applicant demonstrated how they will involve members of the community in Merton either behind or in front of the camera?

Desirable:

  • Has the filmmaker any previous experience of fundraising for their own films and can they demonstrate ideas of how raise additional funds (of up to £3,000) to add to the  FilmMerton budget, which could be either in cash or in-kind contributions?

  • Can they demonstrate a passion for making short films?
