Bold bad ones: Headstone Manor, Harrow

Our inspiration was Janie Tererro who lived in Harrow and was Honorary Secretary of Pinner WSPU. In March 1912, Janie took part in a series of window-smashing demonstrations in London to coincide with the reading of the Conciliation Bill in Parliament.

Over two hundred women were arrested, including Terrero who was sentenced to four months in Holloway prison . The press portrayed these suffragettes as ‘bold bad ones’. Whilst in Holloway Prison, Terrero decorated a handkerchief, bordered with purple, white and green, containing sixty-six embroidered signatures and ironically titled it ‘Mrs Pankhurst’s Bold Bad Ones’.

We wanted to celebrate Janie’s brave actions on our banners by having her name on an axe smashing a window and to also take ownership of the press criticism ‘Bold Bad Ones’ which is now the unofficial motto of the museum! Creators: Claire and family, Annette Kendall, Maria Plausin, Hailey Baxter.
