150 Voices Recorded by Digital Drama for the British Red Cross

Digital Drama has created the audio content for 150 Voices,    an online museum for the British Red Cross.  We trained volunteers across the UK to choose an object from the archive of the British Red Cross, research its background and record a short audio description.

Lead Curator, Mehzebin Adam describes the background to 150 Voices:

“4 August 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the British Red Cross. Since 1870, we have been providing support to those who need it most, no matter who or where they are. Through 150 voices of people from around the UK and 150 objects from our museum and archives collection, this online exhibition celebrates key moments and people in our incredible history of connecting human kindness with human crisis.

During the First and Second World Wars, we gave relief to sick and wounded members of the armed forces, prisoners of war and civilians. Our peacetime work began following the outbreak of the 1918 influenza pandemic, and we have since provided a range of health and social care services and supported the NHS since its creation in 1948. Our staff and volunteers have sprung into action when natural disasters have hit, both in the UK and overseas.

Today, the British Red Cross not only ensures that people get the help they need in a crisis but also works towards building resilient communities. We continue to assist refugees and asylum seekers, people facing loneliness or healthcare inequalities, and those affected by emergencies. In 2020, we are supporting the most vulnerable people affected by the coronavirus pandemic in the UK and around the world. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, staff and supporters, we are determined to continue spreading the power of kindness.”

VE Day Film

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of V.E. Day, Digital Drama has created a new short film using little seen WW2 archive footage from London’s Screen Archives.

See more about the project and watch the film here

As parter of a larger 18 month project, Home Front Film, supported by a grant of £59,900 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Digital Drama trained 35 volunteers across London to deliver reminiscence and recording workshops to gather the memories of 90 older residents  in 6 London boroughs of Camden, Ealing, Hounslow, Kingston, Croydon and Merton. Working with the Heritage and Archive departments of these 6 boroughs, Digital Drama have edited WW2 childhood memories together with the archive footage to create 4 new films themed Digging for Victory, Bombs & the Blitz, Evacuation and VE/VJ Day.

Cast:

Caroline Lawrie (Peaky Blinders, BBC; An Ideal Husband, The Old Vic; The Master Builder, Theatre Royal Haymarket)

Natasha Cowley (Othelllo, Shakespeare’s Globe; Connections 2018, National Theatre; Northanger Abbey, BBC Radio 4)

Daniel Norford (Small Island, National Theatre; Disney’s The Lion King, UK and international tour; Rocky Shock, Wardrobe Theatre)

Jordon Stevens (Harlots, ITV and Hulu; Call the Midwife, BBC; Phantom Thread)

Fast is a compelling and chilling true story. A psychological drama, laced with suspense, it follows the cult health professional Linda Hazzard,  whose cures had a shocking mortality rate. In a chilling parallel to our modern world of influencers peddling protein shakes and pills, Fast is the true story of Linda Hazzard who advocated a fasting cure that gripped the press and divided a nation.

Shortlisted for Best New Play 2018 by New Writing South, Fast is a dark and powerful thriller, based entirely on real historical figures, which interrogates the lengths people will go to for ambition, for a story, for a cure. When searching for a clean slate without discomfort, niggles or twinges, it can be easy to lose sight of the risks of extreme methodologies when they promise to be the miracle solution.

Director Kate Valentine comments “Hooked on Internet influencers, we now risk trusting people who peddle pills and potions and can lose sight of the perils to our health when adopting extreme regimes. Fast depicts a remarkable woman who uses her powers of persuasion to lure patients, desperate for any miracle cure. Laced with suspense and psychological drama, Fast explores the true crime of a woman determined to prove herself to a world challenging her methodologies.”
